New Brunswick Lieutenant-Governor Brenda Murphy presided over the accession proclamation ceremony for His Majesty King Charles III at Government House in Fredericton today.
Premier Blaine Higgs, members of Cabinet, senior government officials and Indigenous leaders were all present for the ceremony which officially proclaimed the accession of King Charles III.
While the King automatically became Sovereign of Canada following the death of Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday, tradition calls for a proclamation of accession ceremony when a new sovereign inherits the throne.
This historic tradition dates back to the accession of King George III in 1760.
A similar ceremony was held in the presence of the King’s Privy Council for Canada in Ottawa today and others have been held by lieutenant-governors of the other provinces in their respective capitals.
The public can pay tribute to the Queen by signing the books of condolence at Government House or at the legislative assembly for the next eight days from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. or by signing online.
More information about the memorial service and how to pay tribute to the Queen can be found online.
