A growing number of women are finding a new way to burn off stress.
They’ve joined the Moncton Vipers, a women’s tackle football team for women 18 and up.
They are a part of the Maritime Women’s Football League with teams in Moncton, Fredericton, Saint John and Halifax, and the hopes of a future team for PEI.

Head Coach Jason Agnew says it’s a place for everyone, “We have mothers, we have girlfriends and wives. We really try to stress the idea that everyone can do this. We can find a spot on the team to fit your skillset. There is a place on the field for every type of athletic ability, body size, shape, age, you name it.”
The Vipers are offering a six-week conditioning series to learn football skills or just to get into shape.
“It’s a conditioning series that we try to do every fall, and then we’ll usually do again in late January, early February. It’s for the next six weeks,” Agnew says. “We just bring the players out and we run them, with a plan of implementing some of the football skills into their conditioning, and putting that team mentality into a lot of what we’re doing. It’s a lot of fun and a lot of team building. ”
The cost is $10 for six weeks, and it runs on Wednesday nights from 5:30 pm to 7 pm at Birchmount School.

The program started on November 2nd, but Agnew says there’s still room for anyone else who wants to take part.
The team has come a long way over the last few years. Agnew says they have a great group of veteran players who have worked really hard at helping to expand community numbers and are really involved. That along with a great group of Coaches has helped them with their continued growth of the team and program.
“Football is family,” Agnew says.
