Upgrades at the Moncton Boys and Girls Club will help the kids stay active.
It has a newly renovated gymnasium, for the first time since the late 1950s.
Executive Director Moncef Lakouas says this will mean more exposure to organized sports, “It has a brand new floor like a rubber floor. It has brand new basketball nets, and it is equipped to work also for volleyball, and badminton. Kids can actually play soccer as well or ball hockey. So the experience is way, way, way better.”
The Club says children and youth will now have access to the newly renovated space that will increase the availability of organized sports and allow for a membership increase of 25 percent, all in a new and inviting state-of-the-art gymnasium.
Funding for upgrades came from the federal and provincial governments, the Medavie Foundation and BGC fundraising, at a cost of around $400, 000 to put in a new gym.
Over 300 kids will benefit from the upgrades.
Lakouas says physical activity is important for the mind and body, “The kids need to be moving on a daily basis for at least 30 minutes. It’s good for their mental health but also for their physical development. So being active is definitely something we strive for to make sure that the kids are moving and make sure that we align them with the sports that they want to play.”
BGC Moncton was founded in 1957, as a place for kids to experience new opportunities, overcome barriers, build positive relationships, and develop
confidence and healthy skills for life.
