The causeway over the Petitcodioac River between Moncton and Riverview officially has a name.
It honours late senator and former MLA Brenda Robertson and will be known as the Honourable Brenda Roberston Bridge.
“As the first woman elected to the legislative assembly of New Brunswick and the first woman to become a cabinet minister in the province, Brenda Robertson broke down barriers and served as a role model for generations of women,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Richard Ames. “She was a dedicated and respected leader, not just in our province, but across Canada, serving for two decades in the Senate. Since this bridge is an important connection to the regions near and dear to her heart, cabinet felt naming the bridge in her honour was a fitting tribute.”
She was the first woman to be elected to the provincial Legislature and also the first woman to be named a cabinet minister.
Robertson represented the riding of Albert when elected in 1967 and was re-elected four times to represent the riding of Riverview.
She served as minister of social welfare, social services, health and social program reform.
She was appointed to the Senate in 1984.
“Our family is humbled and grateful to have our mother’s contribution to New Brunswick and to Canada memorialized today,” said Doug Robertson and Tracy Langley in a statement on behalf of the Robertson family. “We are immensely proud of her many ‘firsts’ and the impacts that she made during her nearly four decades of service in the legislative assembly of New Brunswick and in the Senate of Canada. We know that she would take tremendous pride in having her unwavering dedication to her community, her province, and her country, commemorated by naming the bridge that connects to her home – Riverview – where it all started.”
