Events Moncton has helped bring many attractions to the city.
It has been just over a year since the group was established, and since then, Moncton has seen events including the World Juniors, an NCAA tournament, two hockey drafts, a Guns N’ Roses and Carrie Underwood concert, and New Year’s Eve Family Fun Fest.
“It was a good first year but the work is just getting started. We are in the midst of preparing a 10-year strategy which we hope to have in place by mid-year. The purpose of the 10-year strategy is to identify events that fit our community and our assets and we feel would allow us to create a positive economic impact for our community,” Co-Chair Bill Whalen told Moncton City Council this week.
“We’ve had a number of discussions regarding all of the wonderful venues that we have in this community. Certainly, the Hill, Medavie Blue Cross Stadium, and the Avenir Centre, even though they are really responsible for their own programming.
“We have had some discussions with Promoters through Shane Porter and others, looking at the Hill as a possibility, whether that looks like a festival or one-offs. The concert business is different than it was pre-COVID, I would say, but I think certainly reactivating the Hill in some fashion is a primary goal of ours.”
He also stated that a significant announcement regarding a pickleball event will be coming soon.
Events Moncton was created using funding that came from the city’s hotel room levy. The plan was it would help drive tourism by bringing events to the city, along with providing economic spinoffs to restaurants, retail, hotels, and other businesses.
