Here’s your chance to go ‘Under the Sea’.
‘The Little Mermaid’ is Capitol Theatre’s seventh musical performance in partnership with Tutta Musica.
Director Marshall Button says you should bring your imagination, “What we do have is state-of-the-art technology. We doubled the amount of these LED panels, and we actually have ones that curve and do amazing things. So we engaged this company out of the U.S. to hook people on wires, and with the same technology, we hook people into harnesses and they swim across the stage, but the water is in the background so nobody really gets wet. We do recommend the first three rows of the audience bring raincoats, because it is the splash zone, metaphorically.”
Special crews came to Moncton, including what they call a flight director, who was also a choreographer of the air.
Button says they set up all of the equipment to make sure it followed all of the safety protocols.
“On top of everything, we’ve assembled such a dream team in terms of the voices you’ll hear and of course the quality of the orchestra. We’ve transformed the Capitol Theatre into a shoreline. Just imagine when you’re walking into the theatre, you’re looking at cottagers and Pointe-du-Chene, who become the musicians. I’ll just leave it up to everyone to imagine how exactly we’re going to do that,” Button adds.
Thirty-two cast members will grace the stage for this performance, with a few familiar faces.
“We have searched for some of the best talent in the country and in keeping with our previous themes, we have a mandate to find great New Brunswick performers who are living in or making their careers in other parts of the country. For example, we’ve brought in a young performer named Kaitlyn Post who is originally from Sussex and she plays the role of Ursula. She is amazing,” Button says.
“Emma Rudy, who has been a lead for us in so many shows is back to play the role of Ariel. It was the very first time I met her she said if you ever do the Little Mermaid, that’s the role she wanted to play since she was four years old. It’s like she’s been preparing for those 25 years to do it.”
Opening night for ‘The Little Mermaid’ is February 23 and it runs until March 3.
“I believe we are in the best shape we’ve ever been for any show that I’ve worked on in terms of readiness and the magic for everyone who takes the journey and buys a ticket to see what it’s all about,” Button says.
Tickets are available now for the eleven afternoon and evening performances of ‘The Little Mermaid’.
“If you travel to a place like London, England, or New York City, you expect a certain caliber or quality of show. I can confidently say that you can avoid a border crossing, getting your passport updated or the thousands of dollars associated with travel and hotels. You’re getting that quality of show right here on our (Capitol Theatre) stage,” Button adds.
