The Anglophone East School District has hired security at Harrison Trimble High School and Edith Cavell School
It comes after recent social media posts showed members of the city’s homeless community seeking shelter in the doorways.
“We understand that this may have raised some concerns, and we want to assure you that we are addressing the situation with care and compassion,” Superintendent Randy MacLEAN said in a letter to families on Wednesday.
MacLEAN said the security company will be in place on school days from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. “for the foreseeable future.”
“Their role is to ensure the safety of our campuses while we continue to collaborate with local and government partners on supporting long-term solutions,” he said.
The superintendent said they are working closely with the city, community organizations, RCMP and other groups dedicated to supporting those in need
He added that they recognize the complex challenges faced by those experiencing homelessness and are committed to responding in a way that upholds the dignity and safety of all.
“The safety of our students and staff remains one of our core priorities, and we will continue to address these matters with the seriousness and understanding they deserve,” said MacLEAN.
