Cancer patients at the Vitalité Health Network’s Dr-Léon-Richard Oncology Centre have access to new advancements in radiotherapy equipment.
The centre is replacing four linear accelerators, enhancing oncology care in the region with a $12-million investment.
The new equipment allows for the treatment of more complex cases and improving clinical outcomes.
A linear accelerator produces beams directed at cancer cells, affecting surrounding tissues as well.
Chief Medical Physicist Sylvain Nadeau explains the next-generation accelerators will enhance the centre’s radiosurgery capabilities,
“The integration of last-generation accelerators with highly advanced planning software enables us to more accurately visualize the tumour before irradiation and adapt to changes that may occur during treatment,” Nadeau said.

The installation of these accelerators was a group effort.
It involved infrastructure project managers, biomedical engineering technologists, radiation therapists, and medical physicists from the Dr. Georges-L.-Dumont University Hospital Centre.
“The success of this complex project would not have been possible without the collaboration of multiple teams within Vitalité Health Network,” Nadeau said.
The work on the new-generation accelerators is scheduled to be finished in February.
