Funeral services will be held this weekend as a well-known figure in Acadian literature is laid to rest.
Antonine Maillet passed away on February 17 at the age of 95.
A celebration of life is planned at the Cathédrale Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption at 11 am on Saturday.
It is being held in collaboration with Université de Moncton and Le Pays de la Sagoiune.
Maillet received numerous literary awards, including the Governor General’s Literary Award for Don l’Orignal, published in 1968, and the Prix Goncourt in 1979 for her novel Pélagie-la-Charrette, making her the first non-European woman to receive the prestigious French literary prize.
She also had deep ties to the Université de Moncton.
“Antonine Maillet was deeply invested in the success and growth of the Université de Moncton because she believed that the largest Acadian institution was key to the future of Acadia and its place in the global Francophonie,” Rector and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Denis Prud’homme stated.
Several streets in downtown Moncton will be affected including Archibald, St. George, Lutz, and Victoria Streets from 9 am to 1 pm.
The following streets will be closed:
