After more than 35 years, McBuns is on the move from its current Shediac Road location.
“It has been around for about 40 years, and around 35 at its current location,” Blair Hyslop, Co-CEO and Co-owner of Mrs. Dunster’s says.
The business is moving about six kilometres, to 1615 Shediac Road, which is near the Lakeville exit by the Trans Canada Highway.
The expected opening date is the first week of June.
“The building we’re currently in no longer really serves our purpose. We used to have production there, and we used to do our baking for our small batch pastry and for our small batch regular rolls. We put that into a new bakery on St. George Boulevard around four years ago now. So we now have three times more space than we need. It(the current location) also needed a significant investment to bring it up to our standards. So, at the end of the day, we’re going to be in a brand new, renovated space with lots of parking and the new location isn’t too far away,” Hyslop added.
The new location is being developed in partnership with Fen’s Market, which acquired the Petro Canada outlet on Shediac Road.
Hyslop says it’s a growing, emerging retail operator in New Brunswick, “Lots of folks would know Dwight Fraser’s name from his other business, which is FMI, a large operator of restaurants across North America and very successful family from Woodstock. We can focus on what we are good at, which is baking and they can focus on what they’re good at, which is being a retail store.”
He says all of the same McBuns products will be there, made by the same bakers,”We have one baker who just got his 40-year service award earlier this year, so he has been there since the very beginning.”
They plan on opening a new cafe with a drive-thru, coffee and Mrs. Dunster’s doughnuts.
McBuns will be closing its pizzeria, but Hyslop says Fen’s Market will carry on the pizza tradition, offering its menu at the new location and will include our famous McBuns Steak Sub.
In Moncton, McBuns has three locations, on Shediac Road, Mountain Road and a production bakery on St. George Boulevard, which is not open to the public.
The current Shediac Road location has around a dozen employees, and Hyslop says they will all get the opportunity to interview for the Fen’s Market location if they want to or at the Mountain Road location. He adds there may also be some opportunities at the bakery on St. George.
“For those who don’t like any of those options, there will be some severance packages. We think three or four people at the end of the day might be negatively affected by the move,” Hyslop stated.
He adds, “This is more than just a move. It’s a renewal of our commitment to the people who have supported us for more than three decades.”
