The New Brunswick Provincial Swimming Championships are diving off this weekend at the Canada Games Aquatic Centre in Saint John.
Swimmers from across the Maritimes are competing for a chance to qualify for national meets and secure spots on the Canada Games team heading to Newfoundland this August.
The three-day event, which runs until Sunday, features 245 athletes from 17 teams across New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Nova Scotia.
Participants compete in morning heats to advance to evening finals, which take place throughout the weekend.
“This is the last long course meet in New Brunswick where swimmers can submit times for selection,” said Ben Tremblay, Aquatics Manager at the Canada Games Aquatic Centre.
Athletes had to meet the New Brunswick A standard to take part in the championships.
The meet also serves as a qualifier for national competitions, including the Canadian Swimming Trials in Victoria, British Columbia.
Hosted by Swim New Brunswick and the Fredericton Aquanauts Swim Team, the event brings together top swimmers from across the region along with their families, friends, and coaches.
Meet Manager, Cynthia Duguay, emphasized the importance of the venue, noting that its 50-metre competition pool provides an ideal setting for high-performance athletes.
Spectators are invited to watch the action and cheer on swimmers as they compete for medals, personal bests, and team selection.
