Grad shopping is underway, but some students don’t have the means to pay for prom dresses or suits.
Sarah Hackett is a Grade 12 student at Bernice MacNaughton High School. She says they have come up with a plan to allow students to rent instead of purchase.
“Our theatre costume room is overflowing with beautiful dresses and suits. We thought we would pull some of the ones that are in good condition, that are still quite modern-looking. Some of them were used in the most recent musical theatre performance, while others have never been worn.”
Students can borrow the dresses, and suits can be borrowed for a cost of $30. The students will get $10 back when the clothing is returned.
“We opened on Friday, and immediately, once lunch hit, we had 5 or 6 girls come in and bring their friends to try on dresses. You could see the joy on their faces because they were able to look at the prom dresses and try them on with their friends, and not have to worry about the cost,” Hackett says.
The school is also accepting donations of prom dresses or suits from the public.
“We already had someone drop off a brand new, never been worn, tags on, beautiful prom dress. So we’re definitely open to good condition prom attire,” Hackett adds.
Funds will go towards the BMHS theatre renovation project.
