A new kindergarten to 12 school in Shediac Cape is closer to reality now.
The province revealed yesterday that it will be built on the west side of Ohio Road, next to Route 15.
“Fantastic spot. We’ve got great, easy access to transportation because we are going to be right off of Highway 15, which gives us great access for the buses. It’s a wooded location which will give us access to outdoor classrooms and sports fields. We’ve got plenty of land that we’re not going to outgrow anytime soon,” Anglophone East District Education Council Vice-Chair Dominic Vautour says.
The school was approved by the provincial government a few years ago, but they have all been patiently awaiting word of a location, so the construction could get underway.
Vautour says he has been advocating for the new facility since he was first elected.
“We were seeing the population growth in Shediac really exploding at that time, but it put some pressure on our schools,” Vautour says.
The new school will replace Shediac Cape School, which is currently a K to 8, with the hope that it will reduce enrolment pressures at Moncton High.
“We have quite a few students being bussed to Moncton High now for high school. It’s about a one-hour bus ride each way for those kids. Having the school in Shediac, it’s going to permit them to be educated in their local community and without the bus ride. It’s going to benefit the community with having more extramural activities for the kids in the Shediac area,” Vautour says.
The budget for this project has been set at $105 million.
Construction will begin in the fall, with an expected opening in January 2029.
