The City of Moncton has formed a partnership with the province for improvements on Mapleton Road at the Trans-Canada Highway.
A special meeting of Moncton city council was held on Monday afternoon.
The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (DTI) plans to create a roundabout at the Route 2 westbound ramp and Mapleton Road.
The city’s engineering department also requested a multi-use path on both sides of Mapleton Road under the existing Route 2 overpass, the installation of a sidewalk on the north side of Queensway Drive, and new concrete curb and storm sewer and some sanitary sewer renewals along Mapleton Road.
The cost to the City of Moncton is nearly $1.2 million, with most coming from the 2025 active transportation budget, and the rest from 2024 and the 2025 previous authority.

There are also plans for the development of a Fen’s Market Convenience Store, Denny’s Restaurant and Starbucks.
Further discussion was previously delayed due to input from the residents who were worried about increased traffic and the safety of pedestrians.

During the meeting, Councillor Shawn Crossman asked about how the work will be communicated to the public.
Engineering Director René Lagacé says it is a DTI-led project, but they will be working on the same track as the department to push the same message out to ensure the public is aware.
It was also suggested that the engineering department do further presentations for the public to explain traffic roundabouts, for those who aren’t aware of the proper way to use them and the benefits.
A vote to approve the financial contribution and agreement between the city and DTI for the project was approved unanimously.
