A location and design to commemorate the veterans in Riverview is being considered.
This comes after a request to paint a special crosswalk in their honour.
Mayor Andrew Leblanc says a recent meeting was held involving the Deputy Mayor, Veterans, and Town staff, “We talked about what the solutions would look like, and it was a really productive meeting.”
In November last year, a suggestion was brought forth to Riverview Town Council for a commemorative crosswalk for the veterans, similar to one that had been used in other communities.
It was suggested that it could be done for Remembrance Day in 2025.

According to a monthly report from the Engineering and Public Works department, a request was brought to the traffic committee in January, where it was concluded that the Town should develop a guideline and policy on painting non-standard crosswalks.
The Town has two other prior requests, with the crosswalks at the intersections of Fatima at Buckingham and Cleveland at Coverdale have been painted with the additional Pride rainbow colours inside the double white line crosswalks.
“The additional rainbow colours do not interfere with the proper Transportation Association of Canada (TAC) standard for a crosswalk at an intersection,” the report states.
At the entrance of Town Hall, an Aboriginal painting has been done, but it is not on a public street crosswalk.
“The engineering department is recommending we avoid deviating from the TAC traffic device standards of the typical double white line crosswalk at intersections, and solid
white ‘zebra’ stripes for mid-block crosswalks. The future policy will identify the type of markings and the potential locations for future paint markings, the type of streets, and
the skid-resistant requirement of the paint, among many other standards,” the report also states.
Leblanc agreed that a policy is needed to address these issues moving forward, “We know that is going to come forward to council in the next couple of months to address future requests and put some parameters around what this looks like.”

At the recent meeting, two locations were proposed to help commemorate the veterans. They are: a new crosswalk at the end of Fatima, and a sidewalk
painting in front of the Chocolate River Station.
The Engineering Department plans to provide sketches to the Veterans and is considering purchasing stencils from the National Headquarters of the Royal Canadian Legion.
