An independent police watchdog is investigating after a man suffered a “serious injury” during an arrest in Moncton.
Codiac Regional RCMP officers were called to a report of two men fighting outside the Moncton Lions Club on the evening of June 3.
The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) said one of the two men, who showed signs of intoxication, ran away from officers but was later detained for assault.
“While being escorted to cells he continued to resist the officers and had to be placed on the floor to remove the handcuffs,” SiRT said in a news release on Wednesday.
SiRT said the man complained of wrist pain and was later diagnosed with a fracture to his right hand.
The independent watchdog has taken over the investigation “due to the serious injury sustained” by the man.
SiRT investigates all matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault and intimate partner violence or other matters of public interest that may have arisen from the actions of any New Brunswick police officer.
Investigations are under the direction and control of an independent civilian director, who has the sole authority to determine if charges should be laid.
