Moncton will see one of its streets renamed.
After a lengthy discussion, with some debate on whether to postpone the decision again, Moncton City Council voted in favour of beginning the process to rename Glendale Crescent.
Senior Development Officer Paul Edgar explained the name change was recommended by NB911, who were concerned about potential confusion with Glendalea Crescent. “While there have been no reports of misdirected emergency services of either of these two streets, it is not to say that this could not happen in the future. NB911 indicated the names are very close and could create issues moving forward and recommends that one of the street names be changed.”
Glendalea Crescent is located in Ward 4 within the Valhalla Estates Subdivision. The Developer explained that Glendalea Crescent was named after his spouse, Mrs
Glenda Lea Steeves.
Glendale Crescent is located in Ward 2 in the Centennial Place Subdivision. A search was done to determine whether it had any links to a person, but none were found.
This motion first came before Committee of the Whole in October, but a decision was postponed until Administration could further review with Emergency services to determine if any misdirected calls occurred.
During Monday night’s meeting, Councillor Bryan Butler suggested council go with an alternative motion, which would have emergency services monitor the situation for a year, but Councillor Charles Leger questioned whether or not the city would be liable if something happened during that time, if the name wasn’t changed as recommended.
Councillor Paul Richard and Councillor Daniel Bourgeois also proposed that the residents be able to submit a name of their choosing, with explanation to be considered, but that motion was defeated.
Councillor Susan Edgett couldn’t understand the urgency of the name change.
“If we look at names of streets. I’m just coming up West Street. We’ve got a West Street and a West Lane. Do we have problems with those two streets?” she questioned. Edgar stated that there wasn’t any confusion that he was aware of.
Three names will be presented to Glendale Crescent residents for their input.
They are Mantra Street, which is a French name celebrating the work of Gérald Leblanc, Marven Street, which is an English name in honour of J.A. Marven, who started the Marven’s biscuit factory in 1907 on the corner of Main and Pleasant Street; and Terre-Rouge Street, which is an early Acadian name for Moncton.
