Reassurances from the Town of Riverview about the water supply during dry conditions, and a lack of rain.
Riverview Town Councillor Heath Johnson posed the question during this week’s Town Council meeting.
The City of Moncton provides the water supply. Riverview’s Director of Public Works, Michel Ouellet, says they have been reassured there is an adequate supply, but there are always concerns about an increase in consumption.
“We average approximately 8 million litres per day during the winter months, but in the summer months, it peaks to around 12 million to 13 million litres per day. That peak does tax the pipes, because they aren’t really meant to deliver such a large peak quantity,” Ouellet adds.
Lawn watering is one of the biggest challenges.
“We do ask that they follow the by-law on water usage and water the lawns according to that by-law,” Ouellet stressed.
Watering should be done on odd numbered days for odd-numbered residences, and it’s the opposite for even numbered homes.
Residents should also be watering their lawns before 8 am or after 6 pm.
Ouellet adds that the trend shows that the Town is on the same track as last summer, and that there is no worry that the water is going to be shut off anytime soon due to the drier-than-usual climate.
CORRECTION: A previous version of this story stated water volumes in the thousands of litres, whereas it should have been in the millions of litres. Our apologies for the confusion.
