A 58-year-old man has been charged with multiple offences, including personation of a peace officer.
Officers received information on Tuesday about an individual in Pointe-du-Chêne who was believed to have a retired police vehicle, uniforms, and other equipment.
Police say the man was allegedly planning to commit criminal offences while impersonating a police officer.
Later that day, members of the RCMP’s Southeast District, Codiac, and Provincial Crime Reduction Units executed search warrants at two homes in Pointe-du-Chêne. The man was arrested without incident.
During the searches, police seized two firearms, police-style uniforms including duty belts, a Ford Taurus, radios, lights, sirens, and other items.
The man has been charged with:
- Two counts of unauthorized possession of a firearm
- Unlawfully conspired to personate a peace officer by being in possession of police equipment and uniforms
- Unsafe storage of a firearm
- Failure to comply with conditions of a release order
He remains in custody and is scheduled to return to court on Friday.
“Personating a police officer is an extremely serious offence that can have dire consequences for both the public and the offender,” Cpl. Matthew Leblanc-Smith said in a statement.
Under section 130 of the Criminal Code of Canada, it is a criminal offence to personate a peace officer.
Police are encouraging anyone who notices suspicious behaviour to contact their local detachment or call 911.
