Ottawa’s opposition leader wants you to make sure you won’t go jail for defending your home.
Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre is proposing an amendment to the Criminal Code, calling it the ‘Stand on Guard’ principle.
“Your home is your castle, and you have the right to defend your family in your home,” Poilievre told reporters in Brampton, Ontario on Friday.
Poilievre is calling on the Liberals to introduce a bill on the issue this fall.
He says currently you have the right to use force to defend yourself, but the law is vague and subjective.
“If you’re defending your house, you don’t have time to think through these conditions. You have one condition, to protect yourself and your family,” he added.
He says his party plans to introduce it as a private members bill if the government doesn’t make the amendment.
