A man has been sentenced to four years in prison after his role in a hit and run in Halifax that killed a woman from Moncton, New Brunswick.
The province’s public prosecution service tells our newsroom in an email; the sentence was given Monday to 32-year-old Deepak Sharma.
He will also be banned from driving for 10 years after he is released.
According to the statement of facts, he had hit another vehicle on Jubilee Road just before 6 p.m., January 27.
Both drivers got out of their vehicles, but when the other driver went to get their insurance information, Sharma left.
He sped down Jubilee Road, almost hitting another vehicle, at 126 km/h in a 50 km/h zone when he hit 21-year-old Dalhousie student, Alexandria Wortman while she was crossing the street in a marked crosswalk.
She remained on the hood of his car until a third collision stopped him.
Wortman was taken to hospital where she died of her injuries.
Sharma pleaded guilty in July to two counts of leaving the scene of an accident and criminal negligence causing death.
A memorial to honour Wortman was held after her death.
