Fire has extensively damaged a home on Main Street in Salisbury.
Fire Captain Roy Steeves says when they arrived just before 10 am on Wednesday, they could see smoke but no flames, “Smoke showing from the roof. It was already pushing through the rafters, but there was no visible flame. Firefighters searched the main floor, and all we found was heat and heavy smoke. We then transitioned to a search in the basement where the fire was found.”
He adds that there was no one home at the time. The fire was reported by a passerby.
Crews from Salisbury, Havelock, Petitcodiac and Elgin were all on scene. The other departments were called is as mutual aid. Salisbury also does not have hydrants, so water had to be shuttled in.
All of the departments are operated by volunteer firefighters.
He says there were some challenges while fighting the fire, “Where it was not immediately visible from the main floor, and we had to search to find the fire itself. Their house itself had some challenges, where it is cluttered, and that made it difficult for firefighters to move and complete those searches.”
A ventilation hole had to be cut in the roof and on the main floor, and there is water, fire and smoke damage to the home.
The cause is currently under investigation by the Fire Marshal’s office.
