An initial probe by the Serious Incident Response Team into a drowning in the St. Croix River has been completed.
On November 15, officers attempted to arrest a man who was wanted on outstanding warrants.
He fled into the river in St. Stephen and attempted to swim across, but didn’t resurface.
SiRT says it has reviewed all available information, including police files, body-worn camera and video footage from local businesses.
Their investigation found police approached the male, but he fled, entering the water and swimming away from shore.
Officers called for him to return, but when he didn’t, Emergency Medical Services and the Fire Department Rescue team were immediately dispatched.
SiRT has concluded that the actions of the officers did not result in the death of the man.
They believe the case does not meet their mandate for an investigation.
