A family of three managed to get out safely after fire destroyed a two storey home and a garage.
Moncton Fire Acting Platoon Chief Tim Rossiter says they got a call just before 7pm last night about the blaze on route 115 in Notre Dame.
When they arrived, they found the home and an attached garage fully engulfed.
Rossiter says the bitter cold made it very challenging to fight, “The guys did a really good job in very trying conditions.”
Temperatures were around minus 14 when firefighters arrived on scene, but dropped to around minus 20 overnight.
They managed to save a second detached garage nearby with mutual aid from Dieppe and St. Antoine Fire Departments.
“The nearest water source was at Royal Oaks, but we trucked in water from Dieppe, and volunteer firefighters from St. Antoine were also able to get water from a nearby creek,” Rossiter says.
Firefighters left the scene at around 1am, but were back morning due to flare ups.
RCMP, NB Power and Ambulance New Brunswick were also on scene.
The Canadian Red Cross is assisting the family with emergency lodging, meals and other necessities.
There’s no word on a cause yet. Fire investigators are back on the scene this morning.
