Affordable housing in Moncton is set to expand with two new buildings scheduled to open this fall.
The new buildings will be located on Main Street and Lewisville Road and are being added under a five-site development plan commissioned by the New Brunswick Housing Corporation, according to a government release.
Rising Tide, a non-profit group, is overseeing the construction of three similar eight-unit sites that are already open on McAleese Lane, Botsford Avenue and Norwood Avenue.
Each location will offer 24-hour on-site support services for tenants, including help with budgeting, employment, education, mental health and primary health care.
The support will be delivered through partnerships with the Department of Social Development and the John Howard Society of Southeastern New Brunswick.
Housing Minister David Hickey said in his announcement on Friday that the province is working to address the growing demand for affordable housing.
“We know the need is great, and we’re happy to work with partners to get new buildings up and running as quickly as we can,” Hickey said.
There are nearly 3,900 public housing units across New Brunswick, with work underway on another 127 units at 13 locations, according to the provincial government.
Social Development Minister Cindy Miles said during Friday’s announcement that stable housing can help people feel grounded and supported.
“Having a safe home gives you the chance to breathe, to grow, and to feel like you have a place in the world—and that’s incredibly important,” she said.
Editor’s note: Provincial officials initially said the two new buildings would open this summer. They later provided an update to say they are scheduled to open in the fall.
