Talks with not-for-profit groups are underway in an effort to secure another host sponsor for Ribfest.
The Rotary Club recently stepped back due to rising costs, volunteer demands and declining returns.
City Manager of Events and Festivals Chad Gautreau says they were surprised, but understand, “We’ve been in discussions with Rotary and they’ve expressed their concerns. It does take a lot of volunteer hours to put the event on, so we completely understand their perspective on this. We’re certainly having discussions with some other groups about being able to support, potentially a different-looking event that surrounds the ribbers on site in Moncton. We’re looking forward to moving ahead, and we thanked them(Rotary) for hosting the event for the last 11 years, and we’re hoping to keep it alive.”
He adds that if those conversations don’t lead to a commitment to Ribfest, they plan to work with the ribbers to make sure they have the opportunity to present an event that may be different in shape or form, but remains an option for Moncton residents in 2026 and going forward.
“For the most part, the greatest factor is going to be on our event roster for the summer. I know so many Monctonians and visitors look forward to this in the summer every year. It’s the kickoff to the summer, right after the Highland Games and right before Canada Day. It’s something that everybody looks forward to annually,” Gautreau expressed.
The Rotary Club of Moncton West and Riverview announced on Monday that it would not be hosting any more.
“Rotary Ribfest has been a cornerstone event for our Club and community,” said Catherine Black, President of the Rotary Club of Moncton West & Riverview. “We are immensely proud of what the event achieved — raising funds that directly benefited local projects and charities, and creating an experience that brought people together year after year.”
Since its launch 11 years ago, Ribfest has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for community initiatives.
