Eye opening research has been released by Public Health Ontario and the University of Waterloo on foods with hidden sugar.
More than 40,000 commonly available packaged foods and beverages were analysed. 66 per cent of these products were found to have at least one added sugar in their ingredients.
These include so-called ‘healthier’ foods such as yogurt, juice, breakfast cereals and snack bars along with almost half of infant formulas and baby food products.
Researchers also say it’s difficult to determine how much sugar there is by reading food labels.
A number of health organizations including the Heart and Stroke Foundation have all recently recommended limiting intakes of added sugars to a maximum of five to 10 per cent of daily calories consumed.
