The cost of using a payphone to make local calls is about to double.
Starting May 28th, Bell Aliant says the cost will increase from 25 to 50 cents throughout Atlantic Canada.
The telecom says other regions of the country have been charging 50 cents for local calls since 2007.
Despite the significant growth of wireless devices, Bell Aliant says it will continue to maintain payphones in high traffic areas such as shopping malls, airports and hospitals.
Bell Aliant still has 50,000 payphones in seven provinces.
