The plaza adjacent to the Downtown Events Centre is intended to be a new community gathering place in the city.
It will include a green space and the Ian Fowler Oval will be available for skating in the winter.
Moncton mayor Dawn Arnold says the plaza could host smaller festivals and activities but won’t be able to accommodate larger events.
“It depends on the size, because the plaza is 1.5 acres and can accommodate about 1500 people. Canada Day is much larger than that, so it probably wouldn’t be for that. Mosaiq Festival could probably be there though or Legs for Literacy, if we were having a marathon. It could be the place where you come together, you pick up your kids, you learn about the other vendors, or the finish line. I predict that for a lot of community events, this is where they will start and finish.”
Arnold says the city intends to hold an Open House at the Downtown Centre and the Plaza later in the summer.
