The Prime Minister has announced Canada will be imposing tariffs on US steel, aluminium, and other products.
This is in retaliation for US President Donald Trump’s tariffs on the same Canadian products announced earlier this morning.
Justin Trudeau said the federal government will impose dollar for dollar tariffs for every dollar levied against Canadians by the US.
The Americans will charge a 25 percent levy on steel and 10 percent on aluminium.
Other products will include: yogurt, coffee and prepared meals among others.
The Trump administration claims they’re imposing those tariffs for the sake of national security.
Trudeau calls the move ‘unacceptable’ and says he is standing up for Canadian workers.
The Prime Minister says they plan to challenge the American tariffs as illegal under the NAFTA agreement and at the World Trade Organization.
Trudeau says the measures will take effect July 1.
They will stay in place until the US rescinds their tariffs on Canadian goods.
American tariffs on Canadian aluminum & steel are unacceptable. As we have said, we will always stand up for our workers, and today we’re announcing retaliatory measures to this attack on our industry.
