For her role in the first degree murder of 18-year old Baylee Wylie, Marissa Shephard will be spending at least the next 25 years in prison.
In his sentencing, Justice Zoël Dionne told Shephard she participated in cruel and atrocious acts for which she would be held accountable by suffering the highest penalty under Canadian Criminal Law.
For the charge of arson with disregard for human life, Shephard was sentenced to three years in prison, to be served concurrently, although she gets credit for 841 days time served reducing that sentence to 252 days.
Shephard’s lawyer Gilles Lemieux said his client was almost certainly going to appeal the sentence, but did not reveal the grounds under which that would be done.
Meanwhile, Crown lawyer Annie St. Jacques said they were tired but happy with the sentence, adding her thanks to the RCMP team who helped make the case.
