If you haven’t been downtown lately, take a drive. The lot where Highfield Square used to stand has taken on a whole new look with the construction of the downtown events centre…
Directional signs are now up, to let people know how to get to there and last night, the symbolic piece of artwork, “Resurgo” was officially unveiled.
New Brunswick artist Peter Powning designed it. He says before he began the design, he did some research into Moncton with his wife and this piece of art came together, based on what they found.
“Moncton once lost incorporation, so it was Moncton and then it wasn’t. When it became incorporated again, its motto was Resurgo, which means “We rise again.” It seemed like such a nice metaphor, and I liked the idea of using letters from the word in a contemporary sculpture so that it has a sculptural presence and identity that is kind of separate from the letters, but it also comes together as the word when you look at it,” Powning says.
Powning says there is a tradition of word sculptures around the world, “I’m never really sure where these things are going to go when I start them, but I played with the idea and it really seemed to work around here.”
This piece of artwork came with a pricetag of over $181,000.
