The President of CUPE New Brunswick is applauding the NDP decision to implement an increase in nursing home care hours in their first year if elected.
Danny Legere was asked if he was concerned about that promise being broken when the election is over.
“I’m really encouraged about the fact that all parties are making this an issue, all the major parties during this election, so I think it would be difficult for any government to renege on this because it seems to be an issue everyone has taken up,” says Legere.
He explains the importance of increasing the ratios to 3.5 (from 3.1 currently) – as the NDP, Liberals, and Greens promised to do if elected.
“They’re very sensitive, and they care about their residents, it’s an environment [where] if you don’t care, you’re in the wrong business,” says Legere. “And when they simply don’t have the time to give the residents that they need and deserve it’s very frustrating.”
Legere says while there is a cost for this increase, it will be worth it if it helps reduce injuries, and stress on workers while improving clients’ quality of life.
