The leader of the federal Green Party is applauding recent action by the Trudeau government to help protect North Atlantic Right Whales including a lower speed limit for vessels in the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
Elizabeth May believes it’s now important to rely on information from scientists especially since the mammals are on the move.
“The population of right whales used to live in the Bay of Fundy. We have some very big science questions. Why have they moved to the Gulf of St. Lawrence? Why are they becoming increasingly entangled in fishing gear?” she asks.
May also wonders if the food source or climate change are factors.
With 13 reported deaths since June and only about 500 left, May says every whale lost is bringing the species closer to extinction.
