Most students will be heading back to class tomorrow after a long winter break.
The exception is Maplehurst Middle School which will officially be opening its doors on January 9th.
The new school for students in grades 6 through 8 is located in Moncton’s north end and was built to help alleviate overcrowding at Evergreen and Northrop Frye.
From September until before the winter break, students were attending Evergreen and Northrop Frye Schools, “I think we are all looking forward to not having to share space anymore and just having extra opportunities to use our school space in different ways,” Principal Elizabeth Nowlan says.
Students will have six to eight teachers, and all of them have their expertise, “Our Math teachers, we call them math experts and our Literacy people and our French as a Second Language teachers. Our Phys Ed specialists, Technology, and there is music as well. They will teach their subjects all day long, so they are very strong pedagogically in their subject area,” Nowlan says.
Maplehurst Middle has three floors and was built to hold 750 students, but Principal Nowlan says they will have around 600 on opening day.
“The building itself is going to present some new opportunities, so when students go off to their classrooms, it is a much larger facility and we will be spaced out. That will be a transition for some of our students,” Nowlan adds.
