Moncton City Council has renewed a service agreement for the operation and maintenance of the Superior Propane Centre
The building is owned by a non-profit board, Moncton 4 Ice Sport Inc., which has an operating agreement with Ontario-based Nustadia Recreation Inc.
Moncton leisure services director Jocelyn Cohoon says the four-ice complex has been an important asset for the city with about 12 to 14 tournaments held annually providing an economic impact of about $2.5 to $4.2 million per year.
But not all councillors were in favour of the new deal.
Councillor Brian Hicks noted how a couple of restaurateurs aren’t happy with the City of Moncton for operating Slapshots restaurant inside the facility.
“Directly competing with local restaurant owners who pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in property taxes to the city each year.”
Hicks added the restaurateurs felt Slapshots could be run more effectively by someone in the private sector.
Most councillors voted in favour of the deal, Councillors Hicks, Bryan Butler, Paul Pellerin and Shawn Crossman voted against it.
The 10-year deal will expire in 2032 when the City will purchase the Centre for $1.
